Pathfinders is a non-profit organization whose core mission is to relieve the widespread suffering experienced by those touched by cancer or any chronic illness and promote well-being through numerous supportive programs.
Pathfinders is noted as the “Gold Standard” for psychosocial integrative cancer care and has received a “Seal of Approval” from the Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center as a program that successfully bridges the gap in standard medical care by integrating psychosocial support with standard treatment.
The Pathfinders program combines patient support, community resources and advocacy with a unique curriculum of coping strategies called, The Seven Pillars of Personal Recovery ™. A recently completed study at The Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center found that participants, who received the Pathfinders intervention with The Seven Pillars ™, perceived their quality-of-life as getting better even in the face of progressing disease.
Pathfinders counselors are masters level counselors or social workers with additional training in chronic disease issues, cancer, end-of-life and The Seven Pillars ™ coping curriculum. Employing the program’s strength-based model of psychosocial care, the counselor helps to identify and activate the patient’s innate strengths and teaches the patient specific coping skills that will assist him/her in navigating their treatment journey.
Patients work with their Pathfinders counselors to choose from the following services to create a tailored program to meet their unique needs:
While we offer many supportive services for patients and their families, we are most proud of our tools for teaching coping skills. While we cannot make the challenges of any disease go away, we have seen, over and over again, how The Seven Pillars of Personal Recovery ™ can help patients rebuild hope and find unexpected joy and inspiration even amidst the uncertainty of their treatment.
. . . . . . . . . . . .
All services are offered on a sliding scale and subject to the patient's ability to pay. Scholarships are available.
